Tiananmen Square - Beijing, China - Photo

I love the contrast in this picture. Tiananmen Square is best known in the west for the protests that happened there, but this square was just the center of the celebrations of the People’s Republic of China in the days before my visit. On the right is the Great Hall of the People and on the left is a truly huge LCD screen which better represents the shift towards capitalism that China has taken. This screen showed beautiful scenes of the countryside.

I like Tiananmen Square for its stark lines and somber architecture, and for me it has always been one of the chief symbols of the Republic of China. The contrast between the giant LCD and the symbolism of the square is really interesting.
