Travel to Mongolia – Episode 603

Patricia says, “This was a dream come true for me. I have been horseback riding since I was little so a destination that features horses is high on my list. The reason why we wanted to go to Mongolia was because of the stunning landscapes. We love the outdoors. Thanks to its nomadic lifestyle, anyone who is interested in great scenery and wants to learn about one of the few nomadic peoples in the world, Mongolia is the place to go.”

Patricia started her trip in the capital of Ulaanbaatar where they enjoyed the Gandantegchinlen Monastery with one of the tallest Buddha statues. They also enjoyed the Choijin Lama Temple Museum, the Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan (also known as the green palace) and the black market. At the black market, you can buy anything from “your vegetables to your furniture to your saddle to your sunglasses”. At Sükhbaatar Square, you can see statues of Genghis Khan and his two sons. A number of festivals happen in this square.

After that, they quickly headed out into the countryside with a car and hired driver. They went to the Gobi Desert out past the roads and road signs. You head to the Gobi through Dalanzadgad. The two major sites are the Flaming Cliffs where you can search for dinosaur bones and Khongoryn Els (Singing Sands) which are the largest and most impressive sand dunes in Mongolia.

They also visited the old capital of Karakorum which was founded by Genghis Khan as the first Mongolian capital. It was the capital before the Mongols conquered China and moved the capital to what is now Beijing. You can still visit the Ongi Monastery (a UNESCO site) where Mongolia was declared to be Buddhist.

Patricia also had her chance to go horseback riding, sleep in a yurt and visit the wild horses at Hustai National Park. Hear why this off the beaten path destination is worth the trip.
