Travel to Denmark – Episode 606

Hear about travel to Denmark as the Amateur Traveler talks to Joe Trevillion about a country where he has lived at times and where he has traveled recently.

Joe says, “In my opinion, Denmark is one of the most underrated countries in Europe. A lot of people skip it because it’s very small. People, when they think of Europe, think of London, Paris, Germany, Italy, France, Spain. Denmark often gets overlooked.”

Joe recommends starting in Copenhagen, where you will likely fly in and then heading the islands further west Zealand and then the mainland of Jutland and Aarhus which is the second biggest city in Denmark.

In Copenhagen, we talk about visiting the picturesque “new” harbor Nyhavn, which is a colorful touristy area that dates back to the 17th-century waterfront. From there you can get a tour boat to see some of the islands near Copenhagen. Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen is the oldest amusement park in the world. It is small and can be seen in less than a day. He also recommends a visit to the hippy area of Christiania. Joe recommends looking for a good restaurant in the Meatpacking District and in Nørrebro.

In Zealand, Joe recommends a visit to Helsingør where you will find Kronborg Castle which provided the setting for Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. Helsingør can be done as a day trip from Copenhagen.

He also recommends a visit to the old capital of Roskilde and its Viking Ship Museum. The Roskilde music festival is well known in Europe. It also has a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is its cathedral.

To the west is the islands of Funen and the city of Odense which is the birthplace of the prolific Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. His house and street still look as they would have in the 1800s. Odense also has the “best zoo in Denmark”.

South of Funen is a small island of Ærø that Joe says is worth cycling around. He particularly recommends the town of Ærøskøbing which he says is “just like a fairy tale”.

On the mainland, many people will want to visit Legoland near Billund, but Joe also recommends a visit to the University town of Aarhus. There is a section of Aarhus called Den Gamle By (The Old Town) which is an open-air folk museum. Aarhus also has a pre-history museum, the Moesgaard Museum.
